Selecting Heat-Transfer Equipment by Workpiece Geometry

Choose support, datum, contact method, film path and station handoff from the real decoration surface instead of relying on a product name alone.

Two products with similar names may need different fixtures and contact paths, while products from different industries may share the same geometric problem. Selection begins by describing the actual print band, part stiffness, accessible support and required decoration coverage.

Working rule
Describe the supported print surface before choosing the machine architecture
01

Record the real decoration zone

Overall product dimensions do not define the working surface. Record where the artwork begins and ends, which edges or openings limit access, how the part is supported and whether the decorated surface changes shape under load.

  • Mark the exact print band or local image area on a representative part.
  • Identify ribs, rims, seams, handles, openings and other local interference.
  • Describe the supported production shape, not only the free-standing shape.
02

Treat flat surfaces as a support-and-plane problem

A nominally flat part still needs stable backing, repeatable location and a contact tool aligned to the supported surface. Large, thin or irregular panels can bend locally, so contact evidence is more useful than the product label alone.

  • Confirm backing under the complete image area and any edge overhang.
  • Check that the part seats against the same location features every cycle.
  • Use contact traces or trial results to verify the working plane before changing process energy.
03

Separate cylindrical and tapered surfaces

A cylindrical print band has the same circumference along its height; a tapered band does not. For tapered work, the useful diameters are measured at the upper and lower boundaries of the actual decoration band, together with the axial distance between them.

  • Measure at the print-band boundaries rather than unrelated product extremes.
  • Confirm that fixture axis, part axis and intended contact path remain compatible.
  • For wrap-around artwork, include the seam or start-position requirement in selection.
04

Map contour surfaces by support and contact path

Irregular and contour parts should be described by changing curvature, accessible support, local stiffness and the route the contact tool must follow. A product category cannot prove that one contour fixture or motion path will fit another shape.

  • Identify curvature changes, corners and regions where contact must start or leave the surface.
  • Confirm that the fixture supports the part throughout the complete contact route.
  • Separate a fixed local defect from a changing error before considering local compensation.
05

Preserve compound orientation on long and twin parts

Long tubes and twin cartridges are not located by one point alone. End position, long-axis direction, rotational facing, cross-section orientation and the target print face may all need to survive feeding, gripping and cross-station transfer.

  • Define axial end position and rotational facing as separate datums.
  • Check how the cross-section is supported against twisting or unequal loading.
  • Verify that every gripper or fixture hands the same compound orientation forward.
06

Support thin walls before applying contact load

A thin cup or container may arrive in the correct area but still lack a stable contact surface. An internal mandrel or equivalent support should establish shape, axis, insertion depth and load path before the part enters the process zone.

  • Match internal support to the production part without forcing or excessive looseness.
  • Confirm repeatable insertion depth and axial stop before indexing.
  • Inspect deformation, release and surface condition after supported contact.

Questions

Using this method

Can equipment be selected from the product name alone?

No. The print-band geometry, support, stiffness, decoration coverage, seam requirement and loading method determine the mechanism. Products with the same name can differ in all of these conditions.

Should the maximum product diameter be used for tapered setup?

Use the diameters at the actual upper and lower boundaries of the decoration band. A rim or maximum outside diameter is relevant only when it coincides with that working boundary.

Why is part arrival not enough to prove correct positioning?

Arrival confirms an area or handoff. The final datum may also require seating depth, axial stop, rotational facing, internal support and stable contact. Verify the whole geometry chain at the process station.
