Tapered-Surface Seam Geometry

Diagnose tilted, flared, hourglass and wrinkled seams by reading the relationship between part taper, artwork, fixture and contact path.

A tapered surface has a different circumference at every height. The decoration, fixture and rolling path must all represent that changing geometry, so seam shape is a useful measurement rather than only a cosmetic defect.

Define the part geometry

The useful inputs are the supported diameters at both ends of the decoration band, the vertical print height, taper direction and the actual position of the part in the fixture.

  • Measure the part where the decoration will actually run, not at unrelated rim features.
  • Use the supported production condition when flexible parts can change shape.
  • Keep the artwork reference height consistent with the machine setup.

Link artwork development to the fixture

A wrap-around graphic for a tapered part is not a simple rectangle. Its upper and lower lengths and the start angle must correspond to the part geometry and the axis about which the fixture presents the surface.

  • Confirm which artwork edge corresponds to the large and small diameters.
  • Check that the part axis and the fixture rotation axis remain compatible.
  • Separate a global start-angle offset from unequal top and bottom seam closure.

Read a tilted seam

When the top and bottom meet at different angular positions, first check product datum, artwork start reference, sensing and the relationship between fixture angle and contact path.

  • Mark the seam at the top, middle and bottom on the same sample.
  • Check whether the entire seam shifts together or changes slope.
  • Make one angular correction and use the direction of change as evidence.

Read flared and hourglass closure

If one edge overlaps while the other opens, the upper and lower circumferential allocation do not match the supported part. This points to diameter, artwork development, support or contact-path geometry before it points to process energy.

  • Name which edge overlaps and which edge opens before adjusting anything.
  • Change one geometric input and compare the seam trend.
  • Recheck part support if the seam varies with loading force or operator.

Separate wrinkles from seam geometry

A seam can be geometrically correct while the film wrinkles before or through contact. Edge tracking, tension, roller alignment, peel direction and the way the film conforms to the taper should be checked separately.

  • Find where the wrinkle first forms instead of judging only the finished part.
  • Check whether the wrinkle always follows the same film edge.
  • Confirm seam geometry again after the film path is stable.

Using this method

Should temperature or pressure be changed for a flared seam?

Not first. A flared or hourglass closure is primarily geometric. Confirm diameters, artwork, support, start reference and contact path before changing process energy.

Why does the seam change from part to part with the same settings?

Check part dimensions, fixture seating, clamping force, rotational datum, film slip and product deformation. A stable setting cannot compensate for an unstable physical reference.
