Motion Timing and Synchronization

Read a machine cycle as ordered events: datum, approach, contact, relative motion, film handling, peel and return.

A timing value only has meaning when its start event and end event are clear. Stable transfer depends on the order and overlap of machine motion, film motion and physical contact.

Write the cycle as events

A useful cycle description names physical events rather than screen labels: part located, fixture clamped, head approaching, contact established, part or roller moving, contact released, film rewound and axes returned.

  • Identify the sensor or position condition that permits each next action.
  • Separate actions that must finish from actions allowed to overlap.
  • Mark the first point where heat, pressure and relative motion exist together.

Define every delay by its time origin

A delay may begin at a start command, a sensor signal, contact confirmation or the end of another motion. Two settings with similar names can therefore control different parts of the cycle.

  • Ask what event starts the timer and what output occurs when it expires.
  • Do not assume a displayed delay equals physical contact time.
  • Use observation or machine documentation to confirm the real sequence.

Synchronize contact and rolling motion

In rolling processes, the tool and part must enter relative motion in the intended order. A stationary hot roller touching a part can overheat one line; motion before stable contact can leave a weak or displaced start edge.

  • Verify the roller is in its intended motion state before loaded contact.
  • Observe the start and end edges separately from the middle of the print.
  • Check for speed change or hesitation along a contour path.

Coordinate film movement and peel

Film search, feed, rewind and peel should not disturb the contact that is still forming the decoration. Rewind commonly belongs after release or after a defined peel condition, but the exact sequence is machine-specific.

  • Watch whether film tension changes while the part remains under pressure.
  • Confirm a registration search stops before loaded contact begins.
  • Inspect whether rewind produces a visible pull at the peel point.

Prove the sequence with a dry cycle

A dry cycle removes process heat and decoration quality from the first observation. It is used to prove clearances, directions, interlocks, positions and event order before introducing a sample and normal operating energy.

  • Run individual motions from a safe position before the complete cycle.
  • Check every return position and confirm no step relies on manual assistance.
  • Repeat the dry cycle to expose accumulated position or timing drift.

Using this method

Why can the same delay value behave differently after a speed change?

The surrounding motions now reach their positions at different times. The delay has not changed, but its overlap with contact, film movement or another axis has changed.

What is the difference between a fixed offset and cycle drift?

A fixed offset repeats at nearly the same position and often points to a datum or programmed position. Cycle drift accumulates and points more strongly to slip, missed sensing, tension change or incomplete return.
