Profile Learning and Local Compensation

Treat profile learning as a joint calibration of fixture, part posture, motion recipe and reachable contact path, with local compensation used only after the base reference is restored.

A learned contour is not a universal shape file. It records how one supported part, in one fixture posture, relates to a particular motion path. Stable results depend on restoring that physical relationship before relearning, compensation or production release.

Working rule
Restore the datum and relearn before applying local compensation
01

Build the learning reference

Profile learning connects four elements: fixture datum, part posture, selected motion recipe and the tool's following path. A change in any one element can shift the entire relationship even when the same recipe name is selected.

  • Verify the fixture is secure and repeats against its approved machine datum.
  • Verify several parts seat with the same orientation and support condition.
  • Confirm the selected recipe belongs to the current fixture and part family before teaching.
02

Obtain positions from verified physical endpoints

A stored position is a record of a physical state, not a recommended value for another setup. Approach and retreat positions should be obtained by safely bringing the actual mechanism to verified clear or working endpoints under the machine's approved setup procedure.

  • Identify the physical feature or clearance that defines each endpoint.
  • Obtain the position with the actual fixture, part and tool condition in place.
  • Validate the recorded endpoint through repeated approach and retreat before hot contact.
03

Teach only a reachable contact path

The tool must be able to follow the intended decoration area without colliding with the fixture, losing support or forcing an abrupt posture change. Deep recesses, sharp transitions and weak unsupported walls may need a different fixture or contact method rather than a more aggressive path.

  • Run the full path without process heat and inspect the complete motion envelope.
  • Confirm support remains effective through corners, transitions and the path ends.
  • Check the tool, fixture, part, film and flexible services for clearance at every path segment.
04

Use local compensation only for a repeatable local defect

Compensation should not be the first response to a shifted or unstable result. Restore the datum and relearn the base path first. A local correction is justified only when a defect continues to return at the same contour position on repeated parts while the surrounding path remains acceptable.

  • Relearn after restoring fixture, part posture and recipe identity.
  • Mark the defect position and confirm it repeats on consecutive parts.
  • Change one local correction at a time and verify the predicted area without degrading adjacent areas.
05

Prevent stationary hot contact

A hot roller or tool should not remain loaded against one point of the part during a normal following path. Stationary contact can create a concentrated heat history, damage the decoration interface or mark the part. Abnormal recovery should first remove hot contact by the machine-approved method.

  • Observe whether loaded contact begins together with smooth intended motion.
  • Treat a mark that follows the initial contact point as evidence to inspect stationary dwell first.
  • After a stop, remove thermal contact and verify clearance before investigating the interrupted path.
06

Release the learned path with consecutive parts

A successful single sample does not prove that the fixture, loading and learned path repeat. Release should combine a dry path check, a controlled hot trial and consecutive pieces loaded through the normal production method.

  • Confirm the full path clears the fixture and returns safely through repeated dry cycles.
  • Inspect start, transitions, local corrections and the path end separately on the hot trial.
  • Approve only when consecutive normally loaded parts repeat the agreed position and appearance.

Questions

Using this method

Can a learned position from another product be reused?

Not as a recommended value. A stored position belongs to the fixture, part posture, tool and machine reference used when it was obtained. The current physical endpoints must be established and validated again.

Should compensation be used when the whole path is shifted?

No. A global shift points first to fixture datum, part posture, recipe identity or base learning. Restore those conditions and relearn before considering any local correction.

Why can one point be damaged after a stop?

The hot tool may have remained loaded at one point while relative motion stopped. Remove contact safely, inspect the interruption sequence and verify that loaded contact enters and leaves motion without stationary dwell.
