First-Article Setup for Heat Transfer and Hot Stamping
A step-by-step method for checking machine readiness, geometry, motion and process energy before confirming a production setup.
A stable trial separates the setup into geometry, motion and energy. Working in that order keeps faults visible and makes each adjustment easier to compare.

Prepare the machine and the trial
Begin with a known machine state and a clearly identified product, fixture and decoration material. Do not use process adjustments to hide an incomplete setup.
Confirm guards, emergency stops and operating clearances.
Check that the fixture supports the part without looseness or distortion.
Identify the product material, surface condition, film or foil and required print area.

Establish the geometry
Contact and alignment determine whether pressure reaches the intended area evenly. Resolve fixture, roller, head and film-path issues before tuning heat or dwell.
Check roller or stamping-head parallelism across the working area.
Confirm the product datum, print start position and edge clearance.
For tapered or curved parts, confirm support, contact path and artwork geometry together.

Prove the motion path
Run isolated motions at a controlled pace before the first decorated part. The product, fixture, roller and film must move without interference or unstable tension.
Check loading, clamping, transfer contact and release in sequence.
Observe film feeding, registration detection, rewinding and tension.
Confirm that the part returns to a repeatable position over several dry cycles.

Build the process window
Temperature, pressure and contact time work together. Start from a previously proven material combination or a controlled sample trial, then change one factor at a time.
Use small, recorded adjustments and keep the remaining conditions unchanged.
Compare transfer completeness with edge sharpness, substrate shape and surface condition.
Allow the machine and material to reach a stable condition before judging the result.

Confirm repeatability
One acceptable part is not a production setup. Confirm several consecutive parts and record the product, fixture, material and accepted operating condition together.
Inspect registration, seams, edges, coverage, adhesion and part deformation.
Repeat the loading and unloading sequence with normal operator handling.
Keep the accepted sample and setup record for the next changeover.
Poor support or uneven contact can produce incomplete transfer even when the energy input is sufficient. Correcting the contact path first prevents heat from masking a mechanical fault.
How many parts are needed for confirmation?
Use enough consecutive parts to show that loading, registration and transfer remain stable under the intended production rhythm. The required quantity depends on the product and acceptance criteria.
