Pneumatic System Checks and Maintenance Boundaries

General checks for air quality, leakage, pressure stability, cylinders and safe return to service without publishing machine-specific circuits.

Compressed air provides machine force and motion, but it also stores hazardous energy. Stable operation depends on clean supply, controlled pressure, sound tubing and valves, and correctly aligned cylinders and sensors.

01

Start with the air supply

A machine cannot regulate a supply that is absent, unstable or contaminated. Check the plant connection, shut-off device, filter-regulator condition and pressure behaviour while the machine cycles.

  • Confirm tubing is fully seated, undamaged and routed away from heat and motion.
  • Inspect filter bowls for water or contamination according to the machine procedure.
  • Observe supply pressure at rest and during the highest-demand motion.
02

Use symptoms to locate leakage or restriction

Continuous air noise, falling pressure, slow movement and unequal extension can indicate leakage, restricted flow, contamination or mechanical load. Do not compensate indefinitely by increasing pressure.

  • Inspect fittings, tubing bends, valves and cylinder ports for leakage evidence.
  • Compare the same motion unloaded and under normal mechanical load.
  • Check for binding or misalignment before treating a slow cylinder as an air problem.
03

Control stored pneumatic energy

Closing a screen or pressing an emergency stop may leave supply pressure and trapped pressure in cylinders, manifolds or accumulators. Maintenance requires the designated isolation point and verified pressure release.

  • Close and secure the approved air-isolation device.
  • Release residual pressure through the machine-approved path.
  • Support components that could move under gravity after pressure is removed.
04

Treat cylinder replacement as a system change

A replaced cylinder changes mechanical attachment, tubing, sensor position and end-of-stroke behaviour. The exact procedure is machine-specific and should be performed by qualified personnel using the current machine documentation.

  • Verify the replacement identity and mounting orientation before installation.
  • Restore and secure tubing, fasteners, sensors and mechanical stops.
  • Keep the mechanism isolated until alignment and free movement are confirmed.
05

Return to service in stages

Re-pressurisation should be controlled. Watch for unexpected motion and leakage, then prove individual actions before a dry automatic cycle and production release.

  • Confirm personnel, tools and temporary supports are clear before re-energising.
  • Introduce air slowly where the machine procedure provides that method.
  • Verify direction, end positions, sensors and clamping result before automatic operation.

Questions

Using this method

Is an emergency stop enough before pneumatic maintenance?

No. The emergency stop may halt commanded motion while pressure remains stored. Use the designated air isolation, release residual pressure and verify the safe state.

Why does pressure look normal while one cylinder remains slow?

A local restriction, valve issue, leakage, flow-control setting, misalignment or mechanical load can affect one branch while the main gauge remains normal.
